Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

I found this video on YouTube this morning and it brought back memories of our first apartment near Devon and California in Chicago. We lived on the second floor of a small bungalow, with the owners living on the bottom floor. Not the best situation. They heard every sound that we made and we were newlyweds! ICK

Anyway back to my point, we had street parking when we lived on Fairfield, so when we had a major snow storm like we had today, we would have to shovel our car out every morning before work. Luckily we only had one car at the time, but it was a chore. We were young and we didn't really mind too much. After work, of course, our nicely shoveled parking spot was always occupied with another car.

Some of our neighbors were smarter then we were, they would put their kitchen chairs in their shoveled spots when they left for work.
Then when they returned, they would take their chairs inside and use them for dinner. Everyone seemed to honor the chair substitutions and not park in those spaces.

We never did the chair deal. I really liked my kitchen chairs, they were new and made of wood, and I wasn't going to put them outside. Nooooooooooooo!!!!!

Luckily we only lived there a year. I put an ad in the local Evanston Review that spring for a garage apartment to rent. We had eight calls and we picked the one with garage parking!
So, no more street parking!

Hope you enjoy the clip, if you can, watch it to the end!

  1. Oh my! This is hilarious! Our first year in Chicago's Andersonville was great. Our 3 bedroom apartment had the option to rent a space in the garage for $10.00 extra which made the apartment $110.00 a month! Can you believe it? It was cheap for back then, too. We loved our landlord.

  2. A lot of tasty Indian food near Devon and California. Also some remarkably good food markets. I am looking out at Devon this very moment and it is a bit buried.

  5. Kay;

    I think our apartment was around $125 and the garage apartment was $150. With the garage apt we had two bedrooms . Bob was born there!
    Loved that place, like our own little house!
    Have a great weekend!

    Kay D;
    I know, my Mom lives there. She doesn't have phone service because of the snow. Good ole Time Warner.
    The snow is beautiful when it's clean! Enjoy!

    Laoch;

    The neighborhood was great as far as restaurants were concerned. We had the best take out!
    ...and we felt very safe too, i know I did when I was out by myself!

    Rain;

    You are so welcome. Thanks for stopping by!

    Lin;

    The older I get, the more I could do without snow! I feel so trapped sometimes, if I let myself!
    Have a good weekend!

  8. I feel for you. Snow is something that arrives here one morning, about every 4-5 years. It shuts EVERYTHING down, as we all know southerners should never, EVER attempt to drive in snow. {Don't even get me started about ice!} We play in it, take pictures, build a snowman and in 24 hours... it melts.

    They called for it last night but alas it wasn't cold enough and we had rain. Today we have sun and it's COLD!

    Humans, just can't please them. :) Have a wonderful, WARM weekend!

  10. Oh no! We don't get much snow here, and when we do we try to avoid driving. But we've almost always had a garage.

  11. I've enjoyed living in the city before, but never the parking or driving there!
    When I bought a house in West Virginia, it came down to three: one I loved, one I liked, and one with a garage. I bought the one with the garage! LOL

  12. Hope;

    I need to live in the south, I really do! We went to Hilton Head a lot when the kids were younger. We even went over Christmas one year. That year, SC had a white Christmas. What a sight,it was so beautiful but the drivers were not pretty! They would spin out all the time, particularly when they went around the traffic circles! :)
    Have a nice and warm weekend. I will live vicariously throgh you for a few months!

  13. Cheryl;

    I can see it happining to me too. The car shapes are so similar and with two feet of snow on each one, who could tell! Thanks Cheryl, have a great weekend!

    Linda;

    I know, I said the same thing. Oh no!
    I try and not have to drive when it's so icy out. Parking lots are like a amusement park ride sometimes.
    Those were the days, apt living was always interesting>

  14. Susan;

    I think you made a wise choice. Even if you don't use the garage for your car, it's great for storage.
    I love the city, Chicago is rezally great for a lot of things. Driving and parking are not any of them!
    Have a great weekend Susan
