GITMO

Gosh...I have missed you guys. I am so sorry that I have not been a very good blogger of late! I have tried to keep up with all of you by at least reading your posts and commenting when I could.
Sometimes life just throws "stuff" in your path and you have to take care of it or you'll eventually trip! I don't know about you, but I hate to trip.

Thank you for being so patient with me and hopefully I will be more attentive to my friends here in bloggyland

I did want to comment on a a news report that I heard the other day about the FBI arresting four men in a plot that targeted New York synagogues. From what I read, these men met up in prison(ours) and converted to Islam while incarcerated. The FBI infiltrated their group after the men were released and over a years time,they were able to arrest all four without any lives taken.
We all know that we are targets of people that don't like us very much and even though news of another terror plot sends chills down my spine, I was relieved to hear that the people in charge of protecting us are doing just that...and doing their job very very well !

As some of you might know, my oldest son works in Washington, at the Capital. Every time their building is evacuated,(which is often) I hold my breath for a minute...and then I breathe again,... but I only allow myself one minute of worry...just one, because living in fear is not the way, at least for me!

On a side note,this past week, the Senate of the United States, voted 80 to 2 to block the bill that would designate millions of dollars for the purpose of closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay,Cuba...I guess the government can't decide where to put these enemy combatants if they do close Gitmo. So the Senate decided to put a hold on the funds until the government decides where these enemy combatants will end up!

So what do you all think about putting these men, that are residing at Gitmo... in prisons here in the states?
I have to be honest and say that I'm not to keen on that idea. Of course I wouldn't want a nuclear power plant upstream from me either.
Bu I want to know how you feel... if we close Gitmo, where do we put these fun guys...?

A favorite of mine.

  1. I'm with you, not excited about prisoners from Gitmo being here in the US -- particularly since I suspect the way they have been dealt with over the years has done nothing to improve their feelings about us. So, what's the answer? I frankly don't know and I hope there are lots of people out there dealing with this that are a lot wiser than me! Wise words from Martin Luther King!
    Good to see you back! Have missed your posts, but do so appreciate your lovely comments on mine! Have a great weekend!

  3. I'm with you too. And since I hear talk of moving some of the creeps to here in CA, I'm not all that happy about it. But they have to go somewhere or fix GItmo or something. I was hoping Obama would know what to do.
    Thanks for stopping by my blog. It's nice to meet you. I hope things settle down for you soon. I'll be back!

  4. What difference does it make where they are LOCKED UP? We would be closing GITMO because of the message it sends in international relationships, not because it's the only and very best place to house prisoners. It should never have been opened, but was so that we could withhold civil rights that are granted to prisoners on our own soil.
    It's a mess, and it looks like we will still have to detain some without trial because of the way they have been held and treated over the last seven years.
    If some are sent to maximum security prisons in our country, how is that a problem? No one escapes from these places, and they would not be set free to roam around here. They are not citizens. If freed, they would be sent out of country.

  5. Be sure they'll be locked up somewhere secure or deported. Gitmo is synonmous with Hitler's concentration camps -- not to mention violating our Constitution on cruel and unusual punishment -- in the eyes of the world and must be closed.

  6. Glad you're back. :)

    Tough question with no easy answer. Most of the folks we lock up don't escape. I worry about the "new skills" they learn while locked up...and who they share that info with.

    I just wish we spent less money on war in other places and more of it teaching kids how to grow up to be contributing members of society. Too many of them think a pro ball contract or recording deal is the way to go.

    Sorry, stepping off the soapbox now. :) Have a good Memorial Day weekend.

  8. Hope;

    I have miised you too. I agree with you on spending money on kids and their eduacation. I really think that if we had stayed in Afganistan and built schools when we were their helping the Afgans fight the Soviets, we might have friends there now and not be in the mess that we're in! Maybe this time we can do no harm and just do some good!

  9. Thanks Kay D on your comment.
    Gitmo has to go, maybe the government could sell it and put the money towards our huge debt!

  10. Linda;

    Gitmo is known for torture and that sends the wrong message abroad. Simple answer I guess,not so with he "how" of doing it!
    Thanks so much for your comment. Glad to be back readint them again!

  11. I really think Gitmo has to be closed. It sends the wrong message out to the world. However, the quandry is what to do with the hard nuts who are in there.
