This week I was touched by the passing of Edward Kennedy, fondly known by colleagues in the Senate a 'The Lion of the Senate.'
I may not have always agreed with him politically and personally. but I so admired that he lived his life with a sense of purpose.
I believe that he was willing champion for the disabled, the poor and the less fortunate, which is close to my heart.

The quotes below are from Edward Kennedy himself .
At the bottom, I included a quote from Robert Frost, a Kennedy family favorite.

"It is our responsibility to live in our time — not to look back to the receding shore, but to sail ahead in hope, remembering whence we came, cherishing the values we carry with us, searching out the newer and better world which is the next destination and discovery of the American journey."

"The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."— Addressing the Democratic National Convention in New York City on Aug. 12, 1980, just months after his bid for the presidency ended in failure."

"Since I was a boy, I have known the joy of sailing the waters off Cape Cod. And for all my years in public life, I have believed that America must sail toward the shores of liberty and justice for all. There is no end to that journey, only the next great voyage. We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make."-- December 2008, on receiving an honorary degree from Harvard University

"My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life; to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it. Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was to us, and what he wished for others will some day come to pass for all the world. As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and who sought to touch him: 'Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not."-- June 1968

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die."

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.-"
Stopping by woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost.

  1. These are such beautiful quotes, Peggy. My favorite is the one from June, 1968 about his brother. It's so perfectly said and could apply to him also.

  3. That's my favorite quote too!

It's sad that his moment of panic/bad judgment often overshadowed the good he achieved. I didn't realize the scope of that good until last week when they were doing stories on NPR concerning the aid he rendered to "everyday people." Seems most politicians want to grandstand about the bigwigs they deal with and forget those who put them in office. I was amazed at the variety of people he aided over the years.

He wasn't a saint but he tried to make up for his "sin" by helping others. And there were a lot of them.

    Nice job!

  4. Thank you Hope;
I too was amazed at the scope of his reach to help people that he came into contact with.
I have heard often that you can judge a man's character by the way he treats children and adults who can't do anything to further their ambitions or career.

  5. I too learned much about the man this week, and I loved how these quotes were woven into his memorializing.

  6. Beautiful quotes, Peggy! I really love this one:

"It is our responsibility to live in our time — not to look back to the receding shore, but to sail ahead in hope, remembering whence we came, cherishing the values we carry with us, searching out the newer and better world which is the next destination and discovery of the American journey."

So very true. May he rest in peace.
