Since it's Labor Day weekend,  I thought that I would  pay tribute to the great American worker.
Labor Day is more than just a day off from school and work.. It's a great time to talk to your kids about the history of this national holiday.
A few fun facts to ponder while enjoying your day off.

In 1884, when President Grover Cleveland signed the bill making Labor Day a national holiday on the first Monday in September, he and its sponsors intended it as a promotion of the great American work ethic. Work, they believed, was the highest calling in life, and Labor Day was a reminder to get back to it.
It was placed at the end of summer to declare an end to the season of laziness.

10,000 workers took an unpaid holiday to march in the first Labor Day parade on Tuesday, September 5, 1882,  in New York City.

Today, Labor Day is symbolic of the end of summer, and often celebrated with picnics, parades, or just  enjoying a day off.
However, for many it remains a national tribute to the American worker who made this nation what it is today.

Please tell me if you have a favorite quote.

I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.   John D. Rockefeller

All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.  Martin Luther King Jr.

Without labor nothing prospers.  Sophocles

I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.   Thomas Jefferson

It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to  better things.   Theodore Roosevelt

Do your work with your whole heart, and you will succeed - there's so little competition..  Author Unknown

If any man tells you he loves America, yet hates labor, he is a liar. If any man tells you he trusts America, yet fears labor, he is a fool..   Abraham Lincoln

Man is the best computer we can put aboard a spacecraft …and the only one that can be mass produced with unskilled labor.      Werner von Braun

When people ask me, ‘Why can’t labor organize the way it did in the thirties?’ the answer is simple: everything we did then is now illegal..     Thomas Geoghega

Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but the name was already taken .   Bill Dodd

If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend.   Doug Larson

The end of labor is to gain leisure..  Aristotle

  4. great quotes, like the one about man being made by unskilled labor...seems to me that's one thing kids aren't taught these days-good old fashioned labor-be it chores around the house or other things. Working hard and pride in our work...

  13. My father used to say, "Idle hands are the devil's workshop."
And it is sad that in 2009, so many people would really like to be working. I hope things get better soon.
