For some time now my son has been looking for ways to volunteer in our community. His desire to help others reminded me of a different time when another young President  inspired us to do our best and look outside ourselves to help others.
The Peace Corp was founded during this Presidents very short time in office and it still inspires many today
Below is a quote that I think most of you are familiar with and one that I have never forgotten.

"And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
John F. Kennedy

"We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give."
Winston Churchill

"The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have."
 Norman Vincent Peale

"Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person."
 Mother Terresa

"Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
Mahatma Gandhi

"No man is so poor as to have nothing worth giving. Give what you have. To someone it may be better than you dare to think.."
 Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"Encouragement is oxygen to the soul.."
George M. Adams

"Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth."
Muhammad Ali

"If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever."
Kofi Annan

"What is the essence of life? To serve others and to do good."
Aristotle (384-322 BC)

"Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another. "
-- Erma Brombeck

"When the story of these times gets written, we want it to say that we did all we could, and it was more than anyone could have imagined."
Bono

"Our lives are to be used and thus to be lived as fully as possible, and truly it seems that we are never so alive as when we concern ourselves with other people."
-- Harry Chapin

"He who wishes to secure the good of others has already secured his own."
Confucius

"We are all like one-winged angels. It is only when we help each other that we can fly."
 Luciano de Crescenzo

"If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else."
Booker T. Washington

"A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives the rose."
Chinese Proverb

"A different world cannot be built by indifferent people."
 Nelson Mandela

...and finally;

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1999

  2. I'm sorry Hope, what a sad mess you have going on. You know life is so short, just don't get why people have to be hateful. There is so much hate running around this world, why promote it. Hang in there, easy for me to say...huh?

  5. What a wonderful collection of quotes---they DO inspire to go do something, to want better things for us all. I wish more people would remember Kennedy's plea to us *today*. Nobody seems to want to give up anything for the common good anymore.

But Dr. Seuss is the BEST!
    When I've been distressed
    he's put sadness to rest.
    I'm blessed!

oh pee-yew, that was bad, but his silliness is so catching. LOL

  6. Susan;

I think humor gets a message accross much better the hitting the person over the head with a hammer.
